Galway Bay fm newsroom – Roscommon Galway TD Denis Naughten is the new Minister for Communications, Climate Change and Natural Resources.
He’s the only Galway representative to be given a senior minister position.
Deputy Naughten was expected to be appointed Minister for Enterprise and Employment when Enda Kenny announced the new Cabinet last evening.
However, he was appointed Communications Minister, replacing Alex White, following a delayed Dáil sitting after 6pm yesterday.
Independent Galway East T.D Seán Canney voted for Enda Kenny in yesterday’s vote for Taoiseach, as did Denis Naughten.
Galway West / South Mayo Independent T.D Catherine Connolly voted against Enda Kenny, while her constituency colleague deputy Noel Grealish abstained.
Roscommon Galway TD Michael Fitzmaurice also abstained.
Galway’s Fine Gael deputies Sean Kyne, Ciaran Cannon and Hildegarde Naughton all voted in favour of Kenny.
In line with their party’s decision, Galway Fianna Fáil TDs Eamon O’Cuiv, Anne Rabbitte and Eugene Murphy all abstained.
Meanwhile, Athenry’s Joe Healy – who has recently been elected President of the IFA – says he will work closely with the new Agriculture Minister Michael Creed to solve the income crisis facing farmers across Ireland.
Joe Healy says there are positive actions on agriculture contained in the draft programme for government, including new funding for sheep, and disadvantaged areas.
The IFA president says he expects a strong response on farming issues from the new Agriculture minister.
