Allegations of malpractice at NUI Galway, highlighted by a whistleblower, are now being investigated by the State’s spending watchdog.

Education Minister Richard Bruton has confirmed that a “procurement issue” at the university is being brought to the attention of the Office of the Comptroller & Auditor General.

In March, the Galway City Tribune exclusively revealed that a senior staff member at NUIG had ‘blown the whistle’ on alleged malpractice at the university.

The employee, who sought protection under whistleblower legislation, made a series of disclosures to the Higher Education Authority (HEA).

The Department of Education and Skills was made aware of the case involving alleged wrongdoing and irregularities.

It is understood that a central feature of the complaint relates to the appointment of people to positions within NUIG and to the use of consultants. The university denies the claims.
