It’s been confirmed that the bone scanning facility at Merlin Park Hospital will remain open, despite recent fears over the future of the service.
The matter has been raised in the Dáil by Galway West/South Mayo TD, Hildegarde Naughton.
Deputy Naughton told the junior health minister that there’s been significant concern over the possible closure of the unit, due to staffing issues.
Bone scanning is an important tool in the diagnosis and treatment of bone-related conditions such as osteoporosis.
Speaking in the Dáil, Deputy Naughton said it’s vital that the Galway DEXA scanner remains in operation.
In response, junior Minister Helen McEntee said additional radiographers have been appointed in a bid to deal with growing waiting lists at the facility.
