An investigation is underway into an alleged incident of illegal dumping of potentially toxic waste material near a County Galway river.

The local authority, Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Agriculture have been alerted to the discovery of a handful of discarded cans of weed-killer on lands at Creggs.

The owner of the property reported the incident to the authorities, amid fears for the potential contamination of nearby streams, and the River Suck.

“This is a very serious matter,” said the man on whose property the cans of ‘New Terbel Brush Killer’ were discovered.

“This is highly toxic stuff and it could implications for the environment, particularly contamination of the Suck.”

The property-owner said he had report the matter to the authorities, and he was waiting for the material to be removed in the proper manner this week.

A spokesperson for Galway County Council confirmed it is investigating the matter.

In a statement, the Council said: “A complaint was received and logged by Galway County Council on August 8 concerning the disposal of empty cans.  The complainant was concerned about the possible contamination of nearby streams and River Suck.

“The complaint was referred to Community Warden Service for review and based on the potential for contamination the complaint will be the subject of a technical inspection by staff assigned to the Environment Unit.  This inspection will be undertaken early this week, with follow-up action as deemed appropriate and necessary.”
