Sinn Fein has announced Mark Lohan of Menlo as it’s replacement for Anna Marley on Galway City Council.
Mr. Lohan, an employee of trade union SIPTU, was chosen to fill the City Central role at a party convention held at the Westhood hotel in the city last evening.
He saw off competition from Ollie Burke of Shantalla Residents Association and will now be put forward for ratification by the party’s Ard Comhairle.
In stepping down from her role as a City Councillor last month, Anna Marley attributed her decision to a lack of parental support.
Ms. Marley, who had a baby earlier this year, says she found it challenging to balance family responsibility with the workload of a public representative.
A lack of optional maternity leave and creche services were some of the key complaints she made against the position.
She says changes are needed in local government if representative democracy is to thrive.
Ms. Marley has now officially stepped down and it’s expected that her replacement, Mr. Lohan, will assume the position in the coming days.
