The Department of Education has confirmed that it has secured a site for a new school for Clarin College in Athenry.
Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon says a design team will shortly be appointed to prepare and lodge a planning application for the new building.
The Fine Gael Deputy says the acquisition of the site follows over 12 months of complex and unforeseen legal issues in relation to the site.
The site for a new state-of-the-art building has been acquired from Teagasc and is located to the rear of Athenry Mart.
When completed, the new secondary school will have a capacity of one thousand pupils.
It current serves 650 students.
Deputy Cannon says it’s a significant milestone following a long running campaign.
