Traffic problems are a barrier to tourism in Galway

Galway’s traffic problems are a potentially serious barrier to the future of tourism in the city.
That’s according to several city councillors, who last evening discussed a new tourism strategy for the county over the next decade.
At last evening’s meeting of the local authority, those in attendance were briefed on a new tourism strategy for Galway set to run until 2025.
Members heard that between 2013 and 2014, Galway attracted 1.2 million overseas visitors and 800 thousand domestic tourists for a combined total revenue of over €500m.
It wasn’t long before attention turned to obstacles in the way of future growth – with the finger pointed almost immediately at chronic traffic problems in the city.
Councillor Declan McDonnell said many tour buses spend very limited time in the city due to fear of being caught in rush hour traffic – and significant revenue is being lost as a result.
Councillor Peter Keane said it beggars belief that Galway can punch above its weight with regard to tourism and investment, with such a poor road network.
Councillor Keane also made reference to the high prices commanded by city hotels, and argued that many were being pushed towards staying in outlying towns rather than the city.
Councillor Pearce Flannery expressed his disappointment that the tone had immediately turned negative – and argued that tourism in Galway is a ‘good news story’ and the city has a huge amount to offer.
He was supported by Chief Executive Brendan McGrath, who said that while challenges exist, each and every one is being worked on and will be solved.
