There are 42 people waiting on trolleys at University Hospital Galway today.
The public is being advised to avoid attending the Emergency Department at UHG today if possible, as the unit remains very busy.
The full capacity protocol has been implemented on several occasions in recent weeks due to sustained overcrowding at the hospital.
Hospital management says significant numbers of patients are awaiting admission to the hospital again today.
The HSE says all efforts continue to be made to identify patients who are appropriate for discharge.
The public is being advised to attend the emergency department only in the case of real emergencies and to contact their GP in the first instance.
