The Government does not have any plans to close part of the western rail corridor despite a funding crisis within Iarnród Éireann.
This week, a report on the future of the company warned that some parts of the network, such as the Ennis to Athenry link, could face closure.
The Ennis to Athenry route only came back into service in 2010 at a cost of €100 million.
Iarnród Éireann and the National Transport Authority worked together on the report which is due to be published shortly.
OPW Minister and Galway East T.D Seán Canney says the Government is committed to retaining the western rail corridor.
Meanwhile, Irish Rail is defending increases in the cost of parking at train stations.
Many commuter stations increased the daily amount from €4 to €4.50 this week.
Irish Rail says it’s the first increase in three years.
