The CEO of Galway County Council is to meet with officials from the Department of the Gaeltacht as the Aran Island ferry crisis continues.
Island Ferries Teo has taken the decision to withdraw the service from next month until mid-March due to what it describes as ‘policy decisions beyond its control’.
It follows a 2011 bye-law which introduced ‘per-passenger’ levies – previously, a ‘per vessel’ system was in place.
The matter was discussed at lenght at a meeting of Galway County Council last evening.
The County CEO Kevin Kelly has agreed to meet with the Department in a bid to find a solution.
Connemara area councillor Seamus Walsh says it’s important to provide a secure, guaranteed service for island residents.
