The City Council is being urged to make greater efforts to develop the city as an accessible place for those with disabilities.
At today’s launch of Social Inclusion Week at City Hall, those in attendance heard that the current accessibility of the city is ‘not good’.
The event marked the launch of a week-long drive to highlight the work taking place in Galway to tackle issues facing local communities.
Marian Maloney of Access For All Galway spoke candidly and said many of those with disabilities are forced to avoid some of the city’s most popular areas.
She said the poor surface condition of Shop Street makes it a no-go area for wheelchair users, while those with visual impairments face great difficulties.
The campaigner was keen to stress that while good work has been done, much more is needed to make the city universally accessible.
Marian says the recent examination of an accessibility documentary produced in Galway in 2003 shows little has changed.
Gina McNamara says getting around certain parts of the city can be very challenging.
