A group from the N.59 Action Campaign walked from Oughterard to Maam Cross this morning to further highlight the state of the main road in and out of Connemara.
This latest action follows a go-slow drive from the outskirts of Galway city last week – and a stand taken to highlight the N59 issue when the Taoiseach visited Connemara on Thursday.
The N59 group have come together at the crooked bridge in Oughterard as the set out along the winding road that leads to the crossroads at Maam Cross.
It is a scenic route but the group say that a sky that often changes colours cannot mask the hardship that is faced by the people of Connemara – and many more – who have to travel this road.
Engineers say the N59 is condemned on a range of criteria as regards width, surface quality and alignment. The Action Group have a different terminology; they say it is an insult to the people of Connemara.
The Taoiseach said this week that all the processes have to be gone through before a solution is found.
This morning, a team from the N59 Action Group say its time to walk the talk as they set out from Oughterard to Maam Cross.
