Galway Wind Park has already contributed almost €90 million to the Irish economy despite not being set to fully open until next year.
That’s according to a new report launched by Environment Minister and Galway-Roscommon TD Denis Naughten on the sustainability of the development.
Galway Wind Farm is a cluster consisting of four wind farms – located at Cloosh, Lettercraffroe, Seecon and Uggool.
Minister Denis Naughten was last night joined by Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to launch a report on the development at SSE’s Irish headquarters at Sandyford in Dublin.
The ‘Galway Wind Park Sustainability Impact Report’ outlines the economic, environmental and social impacts of the wind farm.
In shows that in addition to its GDP contribution, construction of the wind park is so far responsible for supporting over 1,600 years of full-time employment in Ireland.
It also reveals that over 100 local businesses have provided products and services to the wind farm, representing a €20m spend with the local supply chain in County Galway.
When fully operational, it will be Ireland’s largest on-shore wind farm and will provide enough energy to power some 90 percent of Galway homes.
Meanwhile, following the launch of last night’s report, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will today become the first serving foreign leader to address the Seanad as part of her two-day visit to Ireland.
