One of the strongest indicators of economic recovery may well be the return of ‘White Van Man’ to the streets of Galway, with van sales up more that 50% over the past twelve months.
And there has also been a surge in sales of tippers, telescopic handlers, diggers and crew cabs, suggesting a return to work in the construction sector.
Motor industry figures compiled by Motorcheck.ie for the Connacht Tribune show that the sale of vans was up 53% from 615 in 2014 to 942 in 2015.
And the most popular colour for vans? White, at a massive 46%.
In Galway for 2015, White Van Man’s model of choice was the Ford Transit (200 units sold), followed by the VW Caddy (118), VW Trannsporter (67), Ford Transit Connect (62) and Mercedes Sprinter (58).
Sales of HGVs and lorries were up from 62 to 72; crew cabs were up from 20 to 67; buses and minibuses up from 23 to 36; tippers up from four to 22; telescopic handlers up from nine to 14; pick-ups up from eleven to 13 and excavator/diggers up from two to eight.
