Rival politicians have united in agreeing to the digging of a channel from flooded areas of South Galway to the sea at Kinvara where some locals are already organising the digging.
Cahermore, between Labane and Kinvara is one of many areas where flooding is very serious with a number of homes flooded and several others in danger.
Already some residents in this area have started digging a channel to take the flood waters away from their properties.

Councillors Joe Byrne of Fine Gael, Independent Michael Fahy and Fine Gael’s Deputy Ciaran Cannon were among a number who spoke at a meeting organised by South Galway IFA in Ballinderreen last night calling for the digging of a channel to take away the flood waters. Cllr Byrne says the problem can be mitigated by immediately constructing a channel from Cahermore to Kinvara. He says its only about 2.5 miles of a dig taking consideration of Caheravoneen lough. The Cllr says the work could easily be done in a few weeks and as the community can’t wait any longer the work must start now.

He added that sometimes its easier seek forgiveness than permission and this is one such occasion.
Cllr Michael Fahy says there was unanimous approval among the three politicians at the meeting in The Acorn Centre, Ballinderreen for digging the channel. The meeting was chaired by Pat Murphy, Chairman of Co Galway IFA.
Meanwhile Cllr Anne Rabbitte also says the only option is to dig the channel but former Chairman of Gort Mart, John C Kelly says digging a different channel from Dun Guaire Castle would be a better solution.
County Council Director of Services Liam Gavin says motorists travelling in the Gort area should stick to the main routes as many side roads remain impassable.
