Galway welcomes two new priests

Despite the ongoing trend of dwindling numbers entering the priesthood in Ireland, two Galway men were ordained this week, while a third will join the church in the summer.

The double ordination has been described as “momentous” for the Diocese of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora.

John O’Halloran from Killannin and Michael King from Renmore in the city were both ordained yesterday (Wednesday) in a ceremony at Galway Cathedral. Galway’s newest priests – who are both in their late 30s – will be joined by Daniel Gallagher from Bohermore in the city, who will be ordained in mid-July.

Thirty nine-year-old Michael from Renmore on the eastern side of the city is the youngest of six and a past pupil of Renmore Primary School and Coláiste Éinde.

Religion always played an important part in his upbringing, but his sister’s vocation was the spur that led him to the priesthood.

Prior to that, he worked in Dubai for a year, as well as taking up acting with Galway Youth Theatre. He is also a recognisable face in the nightclub scene, having worked as a barman in the former Cuba in Eyre Square and in CPs.

“We always went to Sunday Mass together as a family and we always had Sunday dinner together. We said grace before meals and my parents taught us to pray.

“My sister Shirley joined a religious order in England, the Franciscan Sisters Minoress. This caused me to reflect about my own life and vocation. It was hard to ignore a conviction that God was calling me to service and ministry,” said Fr Michael.

Thirty eight-year-old John O’Halloran from Killanin is the son of John and Bridgie, and a past pupil at St Annin’s in Rosscahill, St Paul’s in Oughterard and GMIT.

“I was a greenkeeper in Oughterard for seven years and also worked for a short time at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne.

“Like my colleague Michael, I am looking forward to the time ahead, to my first appointment and to beginning to live the life I’ve been trained for and always wanted,” said Fr John.
