Saolta officials at UHG have highlighted the difficulty in providing blanket parking charges concession for cancer patients.
At a Regional Health Forum meeting, city councillor Terry O’Flaherty received widespread support for her motion to ask that free parking for cancer patients is provided at UHG.
It followed representations from the Irish Cancer Society which highlighted that patients can face costs of €63 per week at the Newcastle hospital.
Chief Operating Officer Ann Cosgrove said a weekly fee of €30 is available to all patients or family members who need to attend on a daily basis.
She said while she understands the situation is very stressful for cancer patients, there is a significant number of other groupings who have ongoing contact with the hospital.
These include renal, ICU and neo-natal attendances.
Councillor O’Flaherty is hopeful some form of waiver system will be considered.
