A special meeting convened to discuss Galway’s chronic traffic problems has been deferred following heated exchanges at City Hall.
The decision followed major division between councillors over the availability of official reports.
The request for a meeting was submitted by Councillor Peter Keane, Cllr Ollie Crowe, Cllr Mike Crowe, Cllr Cathal O’Conchuir and Cllr Collette Connolly amid growing frustration among city and county commuters.
Galway Mayor Noel Larkin said the meeting was called at short notice so the executive did not have sufficient time to provide reports.
Fine Gael city councillor Padraig Conneely questioned the meeting and proposed the matter be deferred to Monday’s ordinary meeting.
The meeting descended into chaos as Fianna Fail councillor Ollie Crowe outlined the major issues faced by Galway commuters on a daily basis. The meeting ended after less than a half-hour.
He says he’s disappointed the matter had to be deferred.
Meanwhile, prior to the meeting, over 100 Galway bus drivers marched on City Hall in a call for support for their campaign against pay cuts.
