Providing better playgrounds is one of the central pillars of the plan to make Galway a child-friendly city.

The planning blueprint for the next five years says that existing playgrounds must be improved and new play areas added to achieve a ‘child-friendly city’ status.

The City Council is also planning more skateboarding areas in the city for older children and teenagers.

The latest draft Galway City Development Plan includes child-friendly initiatives and measures, “such as the development of home zones in order to provide a safe and quality living environment for play, traffic calming and the establishment of the concept of having safe routes to school which include cycle ways.”

Other objectives in the plan include maintaining and enhancing the city’s existing network of play areas and to, “provide new, accessible and safe play areas in accordance with the Council’s recreation and amenity needs study, housing policy requirements and any subsequent strategies.”

It has also vowed to, “continue the improvement and development of playground facilities as outlined” in that study.

The Council wants to adopt a strategy “that will help children understand and feel secure in their environment and will encourage them to experience and respect the natural heritage of the city.”

It also wants to, “enhance the provision of facilities for older children and teenagers within the city, including skateboarding areas, teenage shelters and ball courts”.

The draft plan is currently on public display.
