Galway City Council has released photographs of the damage caused to the traffic light control module at Newcastle, which has been causing traffic chaos since Sunday morning.

A car broke a red light at the junction with the Quincentenary Bridge and was forced into the control unit by another vehicle. lights2

A replacement module had to be ordered from outside the country, and the lights are expected to be working by late on Thursday afternoon.

The problem – at one of the busiest junctions in the city – has led to serious traffic tailbacks across the city as motorists opt for different routes. It also coincides with the Solemn Novena at Galway Cathedral.

A Council statement reads: “Galway City Council and its contractor have reacted as speedily as possible to replace the unit and to mitigate the consequent effects on traffic here and across the city.

“A new control console was ordered immediately and a new unit is being manufactured. It is expected to be delivered on Wednesday. Our contractors will connect the new console to the lights system.

“As can be appreciated, this will require a significant amount of work in installing the new controller. It is hoped to have lights operational as soon as possible, possibly by late Thursday afternoon.
“A single-lane traffic management plan is in operation at this junction. Unfortunately, inevitable delays have occurred particularly around peak hours here and at other points across the city as traffic avoids the Newcastle area.
“Galway City Council, obviously, regrets the inconvenience and delays that have resulted from the destruction of this unit.

“An Garda Siochana has been requested to assist with traffic control at peak times,” the statement reads.
