A 20-year-old man has been charged with threatening to kill Gardai who arrived at his home to arrest his brother.

Ryan Goldbey (20), from 78 Fana Burca, Knocknacarra, appeared in custody before Galway District Court last week.

He is charged with threatening to kill or cause serious harm to Garda Dave Foley and Garda Barry Carolan at his home on October 23 last year.

He is also charged with arming himself with a knife while three Gardai were trying to arrest his brother Chris Goldbey, and with threatening the Gardai present by saying “I’m going to stick this f**king knife in your head” in an effort to prevent the arrest of his brother, while producing a very large knife and a spindle from the stairs in the course of the dispute.

Detective Sergeant Paudie O’Shea told the court he had arrested Goldbey at his home that morning and he had said “Nothing to say” to two of the charges and “That is not true” to a third charge.

Sgt O’Shea said he had no objection to Goldbey getting bail provided conditions were attached.

Inspector Brendan Carroll said the DPP had directed the charges could be dealt with at District Court level on a plea of guilty only.

Judge Mary Fahy asked to hear an outline of the facts so she could decide on whether or not to accept jurisdiction.

Sgt O’Shea said it would be alleged three plain clothes Gardai went to the Goldbey home to effect an arrest and one of the brothers got angry with Ryan for letting “the shades” into the house.

He said it would be alleged Ryan armed himself with a knife and ripped a spindle from the bannisters at the top of the stairs and threatened to stick the knife in the Gardai’s heads. He then threw the spindle down the stairs at them while waving the knife.

Judge Fahy accepted jurisdiction to deal with the charges in her court and she remanded Goldbey on bail to appear before the court again on April 24 to either plead to the charges or have a date fixed for hearing.

Bail was granted on condition Goldbey observe a nightly curfew from 10pm to 7am; sign on three times a week at Salthill Garda Station; and provide Gardai with his mobile number and answer the phone should Gardaí ring.

Goldbey was also granted free legal aid.
