The Saolta Hospital Group has admitted that UHG is no longer fit for purpose – and a brand new facility is the only solution to the ongoing crisis.
At a high level meeting between the Saolta, the Health Forum West and Oireachtas members on Friday afternoon, there was widespread agreement that Merlin Park would be the likely site.
Management has admitted that the hospital is unable to deal with the volume of patients passing through it’s doors – and the strain has led to UHG having the highest waiting lists in the country.
It follows statements in the Dail last month, which described UHG as ‘bursting at the seams’ and less than half the size of what it should be to effectively deal with demand in the region.
Senator Trevor O’ Clochartaigh says this high level public recognition of the unsuitability of UHG is a very welcome step in finding a solution.
The Sinn Fein Senator says that a working group must be established as a priority to begin planning for a new hospital.
