Apple says its planned data centre in Athenry is sustainable – despite fears over the amounts of energy required to run the facility.
The technology giant has committed to running the Athenry base using 100% renewable energy, while connected to the national grid.
Day two of the oral hearing is underway at the Connacht Hotel today, under An Bord Pleanala inspector Stephen Kay.
‘Energy and climate change impacts’ is the first of three major topics being discussed at the hearing, which is expected to run until the end of the week.
Yesterday’s proceedings were dominated by concerns over energy usage, and that discussion is continuing today.
Some appellants claim that the development – which would eventually accommodate eight data centres – will need a massive 8% of the national grid power.
However, Apple says it has clear policies in relation to renewable energy, and has teamed up with Irish company Vayu to ensure that these can be achieved.
All of Apple’s global data centres have been running on 100% renewable energy since 2013.
The hearing continues.
