The West’s Garda Regional Traffic Superintendent has issued a stark warning against drink driving ahead of the bank holiday weekend.
It comes as new figures reveal that 10% of all road fatalities from 2008 to 2015 took place in Galway.
983 road fatalities were recorded nationwide in that period – 330 of these related to alcohol consumption.
Regional Traffic Superintendent Noel Kelly says in the West, the worst offenders are aged between 20 and 39.
He says attitudes need to change if further fatalities are to be prevented.
Meanwhile, The Road Safety Authority has teamed up with Applegreen this Bank Holiday weekend to combat the effects of driver fatigue.
Driver fatigue is a contributory factor in 1 out of every 5 driver deaths in Ireland every year.
Motorists will be able to avail of a free cup of coffee at Applegreen Service Stations around the country, including Galway.
The free coffee will be available between 2p.m and 8p.m on Bank Holiday Monday by saying ‘RSA’ at the till.
