Preliminary design works are now underway at the site of a controversial planned services area on the M6 between Athenry and Oranmore.
The proposed service station is being delivered by Transport Infrastructure Ireland under its national motorway service area plan.
Following a site selection study, a preferred site for the development was identified around 5.5km north east of Oranmore, in the townland of Lisheenkyle West.
A public consultation on the development took place in November 2015, and meetings have been held with individual landowners in the area.
County Councillors have raised concerns that the new service station would be in competition with the new Galway Plaza development at the Loughrea junction on the M6.
The Galway Plaza and the proposed new service station would be just ten minutes apart.
The planned service station would include an amenity building with a convenience shop, restaurant, washrooms, tourist information, fuel facilities, parking and picnic area.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland has appointed a contractor to carry out a Ground Investigation Contract as part of the Preliminary Design Phase.
The scope of the contract includes Trial Pits, Boreholes and a Water Well along with slit trenching along the N18 in Oranmore.
The works are expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
The preliminary design and an Environmental Impact Statement for the scheme will be submitted to An Bord Pleanála for planning approval.
It’s expected an oral hearing on the development will take place early next year.
