An undercover operation has revealed the widespread sale of illegal tobacco across the city.
In recent weeks, undercover ‘test purchasers’ have visited a number of premises in the city in a bid to identify the illegal sale of cigarettes.
The group says many sellers advertise online, while other sellers include pubs, bookies and other commercial premises.
During the Galway operation, seven cases of the sale of illegal cigarettes were identified in the city – including at Headford Road, Eyre Square, Tuam Road and Forster Street.
The information obtained will now be passed on to Gardaí and Revenue customs for further investigation.
One of the investigation team, former Detective Chief Superintendent Kevin Donohoe said illegal tobacco is relatively easy to find.
